Love Jones

lj-live-muso.jpg

I have been blasting the Love Jones album in my car all week contemplating exactly what to say about the band. I am left in such a quandary, a quagmire a complete dilemma that perhaps the cathartic influence of a blog post will help me through. So let’s get to it.

We wandered off to the Armchair on Saturday (as seems to be our ritual at the moment) to watch this exciting new band from Durban, Love Jones. I had heard a few mp3’s and obviously caught them on the High 5 @ 5 (sure whatever), but on Saturday night Love Jones blew me away. There is absolutely nothing wrong with watching Esjay (vocals) writhing around on stage, belting out rocks vocals like few frontmen/women in SA know how. She draws a great focal point for the band and the boys I was with sure as shit seemed to enjoy her. The rest of the band is a technically proficient collection of seasoned veterans. Stand out for me was the lead guitar of Peter Baybel (formerly Squeal among others), he gets very little scope to show off his skills but his clean guitar sound is always simmering just below the surface and when he does finally kick into a solo you know that he is the real anchor of the band. Mike Goddard previously of Perez bangs out a tight drum rhythm, and throws in some backing vocals to boot. Steve (Jones supposedly) rounds out their sound with some clean bass lines.

So I loved them Saturday, bought their CD and have been contemplative ever since, now it’s Thursday. Even while enjoying the live show there were a number of concerns that were jostling for attention in my already alcohol infused mind. Many of these were confirmed on listening to their album and many of which I am sure the band has heard before. Mostly, I feel that they are not doing enough with their sound. The band is talented as hell and they should be applying that talent to break down barriers, to make music that doesn’t sound like an amalgam of post 90’s rock. Their site claims that they have the rock stylings of the foo fighters mixed with accessible pop music. Why must we set the bar so low? Surely the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s or PJ Harvey could be better icons to aim for, and even then perhaps not reaching far enough.

Anyway that said their album is a well produced cleaned up version of the live show. A real credit to all those producers behind the scenes that continually prove that we can, and do manufacture really good recorded sound in this country. Please don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Another complete credit to the band is their aggressive marketing campaign. Online they are fantastic; wallpapers, music video, downloads, a nicely built myspace site and every other bell and whistle a band is expected to produce these days. On a final note, I think you will see a lot of this band, they are well produced and obviously well managed, their sound is going to appeal to a really broad audience (we have been joking that they are almost pre-packaged for 5fm) and the tunes they belt out are really good. I’m just not sure they are good enough.

love them, love them, love them!!!

the first time that i saw love jones was at zacks, wilsons wharf, durban where my good mate , gary nixon currently studying at rhodes university, (known among us as gaz) took the stage at little gig where love jones were the opening and closing act. i was surprised by esjays voice… i dint expect her to be that good. perhaps its just my type of music but i liked their songs straight away and couldnt get the tune outta my head, although i wasn’t too sure what the lyrics where… they gotta really good sound going!!! then about two months later after returning to little old quiet scottburgh (after the december hype) i was so excited when i opened up my cosmopolitan magazine so see none other than esjays face staring back at me. although iv seen them three whole times at zacks, and esjay once before at burn night club in durban, i felt really proud. they representing!!!! and doing it oh so well.go for gold guys!

Isaiah Washington May Get Fired

by Ingrid Diaz on October 20th, 2006

Wow, who would’ve thought that the cast of Grey’s Anatomy would have as much drama in real life as on the show? According to this post over at Perez Hilton, it looks like Washington may in fact be out the hospital doors quite soon.

Producers of ABC’s #1 show, Grey’s Anatomy, are looking to replace the fictional doctor, reports In Touch Weekly.

The cast and crew of the show have been in an uproar after the actor violently threatened co-star Patric “Dr. McDreamy” Dempsey and made homophobic slurs against gay castmate T.R. Knight last week.

Since the incident, In Touch reports that Grey’s Anatomy execs have met with three possible replacements: Fast Lane’s Bill Bellamy, Soul Food star Boris Kodjoe and former E.R. star Eriq LaSalle.

You know, as much as I wouldn’t like to see Dr. Burke booted, I honestly don’t think I can watch a show where I have no respect for the actors behind the roles.

“The melee has set off World War III on the show and may cost Isaiah his job,” an insider tells The Enquirer. “The cast is divided over the shameful event.”

So, what do you think? Should he stay or should he go?

As sad as it makes me, I’d say fire him. No one should have to put up with that crap.

Cisco is just gross

by Arieanna on January 6th, 2006

My first instinct on this was to say “What the crap?!” for the title, but that was just way too stupid considering the picture. But it’s true.

What’s he trying to pull? A Candies ad, cause he so cannot pull that off!

Cisco is just weird. Dirty, odd and ugly. Please, oh please, someone give him a hair cut!!

WOW TV: World of Wonder: Podcast 03-28-07

mars 30th, 2007 by celebrityslip

See more at World of Wonder.

James starts things off with The Secret, which he’s been reading and has become rather quickly a positive-thinking slavish apostle of, despite being a self-described “cynical bitch by nature.” Much discourse and debate (and some hilarity) ensue. Interesting point: Is The Secret a secret Scientology tract? Randy reveals his daily secret activity. Donny Osmond’s The Great American Dream receives some discussion. Sanjaya’s ponyhawk sparks superlatives from James, his arms thrown skyward, along the lines of “hairdo of the gods!” and “the Jackie Onassis of our times!” and “the Grace Kelly of 2007!” Gwen Stefani’s career-damaging American Idol appearance. Dancing With the Stars. That backflip! James posits that perhaps “poor Heather Mills” is really the good guy and Paul McCartney is the monster – and an angry pod squad wrestles that thought to the ground and beats it to death with its own prosthetic leg. Interesting point from Fenton: What stands out in the singing competition is not the singing but the hair, and what stands out in the dancing competition is not the dancing but the leg. More chat on that, etc. James admits to having a jewelry hard-on from The Tudors the likes of which he hasn’t had since 300. “History as just pornographic romp,” says Fenton. “Why didn’t we think of that?” In fact, James, bringing up The Secret again, says that since he’s been chanting, “Tudor, Tudor, Tudor,” for the last three months, he feels responsible for the series. Perez Hilton’s high-school pics. Beverly Johnson’s cold sore. The View feuds. Joy’s change. Rosie doesn’t embrace positivity, James believes. More opining on Rosie until James feels, he just feels he has gone too far.
